TACLOBAN CITY – The Borongan city government is set to implement the PalengQR Plus system, a digital payment initiative aimed at promoting cashless transactions in public markets and transport hubs.
Developed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the program seeks to modernize payment methods by using a unified quick-response (QR) code system.
“I am excited to announce that the PalengQR Plus system of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas will soon be implemented in Borongan, benefiting business owners, market vendors, and drivers directly,” Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda said.
“The goal of PalengQR Plus is to make public transactions faster and more efficient through a QR-based payment system, allowing smoother and more secure purchases of goods and services,” he added.
Ahead of the system’s rollout, a Financial Literacy Program will be conducted on March 18, 2025, at the Borongan City Transport Terminal.
This training aims to equip local vendors, tricycle drivers, and micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) owners with financial management skills and prepare them for QR-based commercial transactions.
“I encourage our local business owners, vendors, and drivers to participate in the Financial Literacy Program on March 18 at the Borongan City Transport Terminal in preparation for the system’s launch,” Mayor Agda urged.
The PalengQR Plus system will be officially launched in Borongan City on March 19, 2025.
The program aligns with the joint memorandum circular issued by the DILG and BSP on June 21, 2022, which encourages local government units (LGUs) to implement cashless payment systems in public markets and transportation hubs.
