CATARMAN, N. Samar– The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Northern Samar First District Engineering Office (NSFDEO) dredging operations in the heavily silted channels of Catarman, Northern Samar have made substantial progress offering residents hope for a safer future.
District Engineer Alvin A. Ignacio reported that as of January 25, 2025, a total of 46,496 cubic meters or 36.36 percent of the targeted 127,883.38 cubic meters of silt from said creeks has been dredged since the dredging operations started in April 2024.
Based on the report of Engr. John Von B. Asid of DPWH Regional Equipment Management Division (EMD), the team had already cleared and excavated portions of Maroyondoyon creek while clearing works is currently on going at Kaglangkoy creek. He further stated that operations will remain on track despite of occasional interruptions due to equipment maintenance and repairs.
Meanwhile, DE Ignacio have seen notable improvements that residents have already observed specially from the recent shearline experience in Catarman.
“Before, flooding used to be an immediate concern specially during inclement weather, with the continuous dredging operations, risk of immediate flooding during rain has lessened providing residents with much-needed relief.”
Once completed, the dredging operation will significantly enhance the municipality’s resilience against future flooding events, helping to safeguard lives and properties.
