TACLOBAN CITY – In an effort to protect residents from the dangers of flooding, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Leyte 2nd District Engineering Office has initiated the construction of a flood control structure along the Binahaan River in Barangay San Benito, Dagami, Leyte.

The project, with a total budget of P47.76 million, is funded through the 2024 DPWH General Appropriation Act (GAA).

It is part of the broader program for the construction and rehabilitation of flood mitigation facilities within major river basins and principal rivers.

The flood control structure will feature a concrete foundation and stone masonry works, designed to keep water within the river channel and reduce the risk of overflow during heavy rains.

District Engineer Leo Edward Oppura reported that the project has already reached 57.42% completion and is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.

“The flood control project is crucial for protecting the community from severe flooding and minimizing damage to agricultural lands and livestock, which are the primary sources of livelihood for the residents,” he said.

The Binahaan River has long been a major contributor to catastrophic flooding in the region, particularly during typhoons and the rainy season.

This project is seen as a vital component of the government’s broader flood mitigation strategy, aimed at reducing the long-term impacts of these natural disasters.
