TACLOBAN CITY– With the Holy Week rush now over and summer break in full swing, personnel from the Philippine National Police-Aviation Security Unit (PNP-ASU) continue to assist travelers at Daniel Z. Romualdez (DZR) Airport in Tacloban City, providing support at the arrival area and manning the help desk at the tourist lounge.
Air passenger traffic at Tacloban Airport grew by 7 percent in 2024, based on the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) report. From the 1.57 million inbound and outbound passengers in 2023, the figure rose by over 100,000 last year—an increase largely driven by the opening of new routes from Davao and Iloilo in the latter part of the year.
Currently, the airport handles 16 to 20 flights daily, including several flights from Metro Manila and Cebu. The Department of Tourism-Eastern Visayas credited the rise in travel activity to improved connectivity to the region.
Development at DZR Airport is steadily progressing, with major upgrades set for completion by 2026. The airport is being prepared for its transformation into an international gateway by 2028, aligning its services, facilities, and equipment with global aviation standards.
Meantime, the number of travelers—both locals and tourists—remains high as the summer season continues. To keep everything safe and orderly, authorities have increased their presence to help travelers and manage any security threats.
